Short description of the contract or purchase(s)

A workstation comprising of a combined focused gallium ion gun and scanning electron microscope. It will be capable of acquiring secondary electron and secondary ion images with a spatial resolution of a few nanometres from a range of materials that may be insulating in nature.

It will also be capable of etching materials at high spatial resolution with suitable etch enhancement chemistries as well as options of deposition of metals and insulators. The system should be optimised for low-damage cutting of materials with the ion beam, for example giving low-damage TEM specimens and low-damage optical devices.

Therefore, the low-energy performance of the ion gun is crucial for our applications. The workstation will be installed in the basement of the HH Wills Physics Laboratory, University of Bristol, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol, UK.
