The Trawsfynydd Decommissioning Site is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced supplier to provide a forecast quantity of 130 concrete overpacks. The over-pack comprises a reinforced concrete box and a reinforced concrete lid. The dimensions of the complete over-pack are approximately 2.7m x 2.7m x 2.2m high and have an approximate weight of 30 tonnes. The lid is removable to enable Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) packages (3m3 Box or 3m3 Drum) to be inserted into the box. After replacing the lid, the complete over-pack can be transported and stored.
The box (approximate dimensions 2.7m x 2.7m x 1.8m high) has walls and floor which are 450mm thick. This thickness is required for radiological shielding, and is based on a concrete density of 2 300kg/m3.
The lid (approximate dimensions 2.7m x 2.7m x 0.50m high) is a close fit to the top of the box.
The box and lid have a fabricated steel lifting embedment cast to facilitate lifting of the box or lid separately or the complete over-pack by a purpose built straddle carrier and lifting frame. Connections between the frame and the embedment’s are by quick release attachments known as Twist-locks.
The total number of over-packs required is predicted to be 133 units. A production rate of 4 units per week is envisaged, delivery to site to start in August 2013 to March 2014.
