We want to explore the views and experience of disabled children and young people living in households with different levels of low income. Our aim is to determine how income affects disabled children and young people’s access to and realisation of key
rights as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). We would like to contribute to the debate on child poverty and income from a children’s rights perspective. We are interested in disabled children and young people’s perceptions
of the impact of low income. In turn we want to understand how disabled children and young people feel that income impacts on and affects their rights. The Child Poverty Act requires the government to develop a Child Poverty Strategy which will be revised
every three years. Our findings from this research should be able to shape the next strategy from a child rights perspective due in 2013.
