NHS Greater Manchester on behalf of NHS Tameside & Glossop is inviting expressions of interest to deliver a safe, cost-effective and patient centred Nerve Conduction Studies within the Tameside locality. The service will initially provide surgical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. It is anticipated however, that in consultation and partnership with commissioners, the service will develop through its first 6 to 12 months and expand its capacity to include other hand procedures that can be safely delivered in a community setting under local or regional anaesthetic. Such as:
— Carpal tunnel decompression,
— tennis elbow release,
— removal of solid lumps in the hand that cause nerve compression/entrapment,
— Dupuytren’s fasciectomy/fasciostomy General Overview Carpal Tunnel syndrome is a relatively common condition that affects the nerves of the hand causing pain, numbness and a burning or tingling sensation in the hand and fingers. Symptoms can be intermittent, and range from mild to severe.
Patients typically present with nocturnal dysaethesia in the hand, which wears off with activity. It is estimated that up to.
5 % of women and 3 % of men have carpal tunnel syndrome. Most cases are in people aged 45-64 years.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is also common in pregnant women, possibly due to fluid retention. Expected outcomes including improving prevention:
— excellent clinical treatment outcomes,
— all minor hand surgery performed under local/regional block anaesthesia is carried out in a community setting,
— all treatments carried out within 12 weeks of the date of referral high patient/carer satisfaction.
